The Dart 16’s original SCHRS ratings and PY’s were a matter of concern as the boat seemed uncompetitive against other classes. This emanated mainly from the weights that were not representative of normal production.
Clearly the boat needed re-measurement and with the co-operation of Laser this has now been done and revised SCHRS ratings for the two class boats (Dart 16 2 sail and Dart 16X race) will soon be published on the SCHRS.com website.
All other variations of the boat including singlehanded sailing with 1,2 or 3 sails are covered by the SCHRS ratings from their calculations and are shown on the attached chart.
In addition the SCHRS have produced conversion factor to convert any SCHRS rating to a PY handicap (multiply by 692.7) and clubs can use whatever system they prefer as all variations are covered.
It should be stressed that a SCHRS rating is a rating based solely on the technical specifications of the boat whereas a PY handicap is a fleet performance handicap that takes into account the ability of the crew and their results as reported by sailing clubs.
The SCHRS’s chief measurer Dave Chivers has re-measured the Dart 16 & Dart 16X as these are the 2 declared class boats produced by Laser.
From these measurements, ratings for all variations of Dart 16/X sail plan and crew can be found and are shown on the attached chart and below.
